FC Barcelona tops Galaxy

PASADENA, Calif. (AP)—Pedro Rodriguez and Jeffren Suarez scored to give FC Barcelona a 2-1 exhibition victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in front of 93,137 fans at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night.

“It’s a night we can all be proud of,” said David Beckham, who scored for the Galaxy. “It’s an experience all of us won’t forget.”

Beckham received a mixed reception when the starting lineups were introduced and was booed by the predominantly pro-Barcelona crowd virtually every time he touched the ball.

“There’s going to be the odd reaction from a minority of people,” Beckham said. “But 95 percent, 97 percent of the fans have been incredible.”

The crowd was the largest for a soccer game in the United States since the 1994 World Cup.

Suarez, who replaced Lionel Messi at halftime, broke a 1-1 tie in the 67th minute. Sergio Busquets sent a through ball to Suarez, who scored from 13 yards.

Rodriguez gave Barcelona a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when he converted the deflected rebound of Messi’s shot from 4 yards.

“They’ve shown that they’ve got a great future ahead of them,” Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen said of Suarez and Rodriguez. “They’re able to dribble very quickly, go past players and open up spaces.”

Beckham tied it in the 45th minutes with a 26-yard free kick that curled into the upper-left corner.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew it was going in,” Beckham said. “It’s like a golfer. When you hit the sweet spot, you know where it’s going.”

The match was the first in FC Barcelona’s three-game tour of the United States. Barcelona will face the Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday night, then will play Mexico’s CD Guadalajara at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park.

Beasley wants more playing time in Scotland

LONDON (AP)—DaMarcus Beasley is hoping for more playing time with his club in Scotland this season, which could help the midfielder’s chances of playing a big part for the U.S. team if it qualifies for the 2010 World Cup.

He’s also trying to put behind him a costly mistake made during the Confederations Cup.

Beasley was involved in a mix-up that led to a crucial second goal in a 3-0 loss to Brazil on June 18. Beasley apologized for the error, but coach Bob Bradley dropped him for the rest of the tournament.

“It was very disappointing. One mistake and I’m out,” Beasley told The Associated Press on Sunday, after his Glasgow Rangers lost 3-0 in a preseason game against English club Arsenal.

“It just shows that no player is guaranteed a spot. It’s the first time ever in my career that it’s happened to me in the national team. It was difficult to swallow.

“I wanted to help my team win, be part of it, because I didn’t feel a part of it.”

After he lost his place on the team, the U.S. went on to reach the Confederations Cup final and beat Spain along the way. In the championship match against Brazil, the U.S. was leading 2-0 at halftime before falling 3-2.

Beasley, a big part of the U.S. World Cup teams in 2002 and 2006, became a virtual nonentity by the end of his second season with Rangers. He appeared in 11 Scottish Premier League games, plus one each in the Scottish League and FA Cup, and the 27-year-old didn’t score a single goal. He got into just three games after Dec. 6.

Bradley recently complained that he sees rusty players arriving at U.S. national team camps because many key Americans have been buried on the benches of their European clubs.

“If you’re in form, you’re going to play,” Beasley said. “It’s as simple as that. I think that’s how every national team coach wants it to be, wants players to be in form. If I can get a good run of games and be fit and be back to the way I used to play, then I think (Bradley) will be happy with that.”

Beasley had been hampered by injuries during his two seasons with Rangers, but feels he is ready to prove he can play regularly. He played the first 45 minutes in Sunday’s match and was substituted after halftime.

The Scottish league season begins Aug. 15.

“The main thing is being injury-free,” he said. “At the same time I want to play. The (coach) knows that. I’m trying to come into camp fitter and try to stake my claim.”

The U.S. hasn’t named its team for a crucial World Cup qualifier Aug. 12 against Mexico at Azteca Stadium, but Beasley expects to know this week if he’s been included.

U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu, who also plays for Rangers, is progressing well from knee surgery and is set to return in mid-September, Rangers manager Walter Smith said Sunday.

Edu had surgery in June after being injured in the Scottish Premier League title-clincher against Dundee United on May 24.

Capello, Ferguson, Mourinho lead Robson tributes

LONDON (AP)—Describing Bobby Robson as a colossal man with extraordinary enthusiasm, Fabio Capello, Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and FIFA president Sepp Blatter led tributes to the former England manager, who died at age 76 on Friday after a long struggle with cancer.

Prince William, president of the Football Association, said the much-traveled coach was also a superb ambassador for the national game. Prime Minister Gordon Brown praised Robson’s passion, patriotism, dedication and professionalism, and European champion Barcelona, one of his former clubs, said he was an authentic legend of world soccer.

Robson took England to the World Cup semifinal in 1990, when it lost to West Germany on penalties, and successfully ran clubs on home soil and in Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. But there were tributes too for the way he fought against cancer, having first been diagnosed in 1991 but worked in soccer until two years ago.

“It is difficult to accept such a person is no longer with us but he is immortal because he leaves in everybody who knows him a mark of his personality. A great coach but, more than that, a great person,” said Mourinho, who worked under Robson at Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto and Barcelona, went on to lead Chelsea to back-to-back Premier League titles and is now in charge of Italian champion Inter Milan.

“I hadn’t spoken to him in the last two months because it was hard for me. It was me who found it hard because I didn’t want to think that he was dying, that wasn’t the image that I wanted to keep with me forever of Bobby Robson, that wasn’t the voice I wanted to hear.

“I wanted to and I will keep with me always the Bobby Robson of every day, a person who had extraordinary passion for life and for football, with an extraordinary enthusiasm.”

Manchester United manager Ferguson saw Robson as a friend as well as a rival.

“In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above Bobby Robson,” said Ferguson, who has led the Red Devils to 11 Premier League titles in the last 17 seasons. “I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed. His character was hewn out of the coal face, developed by the Durham County mining background that he came from.

“His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a genuinely colossal human being.”

Capello praised Robson’s courage and spirit in the face of an illness that kept returning.

“He was a fantastic man, and loved by so many people. His spirit and courage was incredible,” the Italian said. “To fight cancer so many times really showed the strength of the man. All the time we spoke over a cup of coffee with his close family, his passion for football shone through.”

Blatter described Robson as one of the greatest personalities in soccer.

“He always showed great passion for the game and will be missed by all football fans across the globe,” the FIFA president said. “On behalf of the worldwide football family, I would like to thank Sir Bobby Robson for his memorable contribution to the beautiful game.”

Robson’s last job as a manager was with his hometown club Newcastle, where the players and staff held a minute’s silence at Friday’s training.

Robson’s death came five days after he appeared in a wheelchair at Newcastle’s St. James’ Park on Sunday when thousands of fans crowded into the stadium to pay tribute to him and raise funds for his cancer charity.

Newcastle’s ground stayed open much of the day for fans to leave flowers and tributes and Ipswich, another former club, opened a book of remembrance ahead of Friday’s preseason friendly with Spanish club Real Valladolid.

Ibrahimovic Barcelona move 'completed Monday'

BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) - The transfer of Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Inter Milan to Barcelona is expected to be completed on Monday, Nou Camp official Txiki Begiristain said on Friday.

"There is agreement in principle between Inter and player and the documents are being prepared at the moment," he said on the Spanish club's web TV channel.

"The only thing missing is the actual transfer document which (Barcelona's) financial director and managing director are currently in Milan negotiating with Inter's representatives.

"Taking this into account, the club will do all it can to conclude the agreement quickly, and to present the player as soon as possible. It might be on Monday," he said.

Ibrahimovic has left the club's pre-season training camp in the United States and returned to his native Sweden.

He was the top scorer in Serie A last season and has been Inter's best player since joining the club in 2006 when Juventus were demoted to Serie B for match-fixing.

The complex 50 million euro deal between the Italian and Spanish clubs will also see Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o switch from Barcelona and Belarusian winger Alexander Hleb to go on a season-loan to the San Siro.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Eto'o will sign a five-year deal worth between 10-10.5 million euros a year.

The 28-year-old Eto'o, who joined the Catalan side in 2004, has a year left in his contract with Barcelona but management at the Catalans have made it clear they have had enough of him.

He was the club's top scorer in the Spanish league last season, with 30 goals.

In Milan, meanwhile, Ibrahimovic's agent Mino Raiola said he was on his way to Spain to continue talks with the Spanish champions.

"We haven't yet reached an agreement. Now I'm going to Barcelona and for today it's over," said Raiola after emerging from a meeting in Milan with Inter and Barca representatives.

"There are no problems but we're trying to reach the best possible solution."

KAKA TO REAL MADRID

MADRID (AFP) – Real Madrid's new 'Galactico' signing Kaka received a triumphant welcome from tens of thousands of fans as he was presented at the club's stadium on Tuesday.

"I want to write my name into the history of this club," the Brazilian midfielder told the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the Spanish capital.

Kaka showed off his new "number eight" shirt, which he took over from Argentinian Fernando Gago, who now takes the "number five."

The Brazilian, whose full name is Ricardo Izecson Dos Santos Leite, was signed for 65 million euros from AC Milan in early June.

Real president Florentino Perez praised Kaka as "one of the best players in the world", for his "impeccable behaviour" and as "one of the icons of our time."

The 80,000-capacity stadium appeared mostly full for the presentation, with many of the fans waving Brazilians flags.

The 27-year-old Kaka signed a six-year contract worth nine million euros a year.

He arrived in Madrid earlier on Tuesday with his father from South Africa, where he won the Confederations Cup with Brazil. He later passed a medical exam at the club.

Another of the so-called "new Galacticos" at the club, Cristiano Ronaldo, was signed from Manchester United for a world record 93 million euros, and will be presented to the supporters on July 6.

"It will be a privilege to play with Ronaldo, there will be no rivalry," Kaka told a news conference.

Perez, who returned as president of Real last month, said he wants Real "to one day be elected the best in history."

He first led Real from 2000 to 2006, when it earned the nickname "Los Galacticos", winning the Primera Liga twice and European Champions League with such stars as Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo, David Beckham and Michael Owen.

Man Utd confirm Ronaldo transfer deal completed

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Manchester United on Wednesday confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo's world-record 93 million euros transfer to Real Madrid has been completed.

An "unconditional 80million pounds" fee was agreed between the clubs last month and then last Friday the Spanish giants announced that the signing of the world player of the year was official.

A statement on the Manchester United club website on Wednesday confirmed that the transfer fee had been paid.

Manager Alex Ferguson used the occasion to pay tribute to the Portuguese winger despite friction between him and the player last season as the Real transfer loomed.

"Cristiano has been a marvellous player for Manchester United. His six years at Old Trafford have seen him develop into the best footballer in the world," he said.

"His contribution has been a major factor in the club's success in that time and his talent, his ability to entertain and his infectious personality have enthralled fans the world over.

"Everyone here wishes him well in his future career."

Agent: Real Madrid Or Barcelona Have Not Asked About Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's agent, Minio Raiola, has revealed he has not received any calls from Real Madrid or Barcelona for his client, and he admits the decision as to whether his man stays or goes is down to Inter.

Plenty of hype has surrounded the 'Ibra' camp this summer as wild speculation and theories have linked him with mega moves to the Spanish giants. The Ibrahimovic - Samuel Eto'o swap deal fizzled out and the feeling in Milan was that the big striker would remain.

Inter are keen on keeping their man, but Raiola still feels his client could leave if the Spanish clubs convinced the Italian side to sell their star man.

"Real Madrid and Barcelona have not been in touch with me. If someone comes to an agreement with Inter [over Ibrahimovic] by August 30 then we will make a move," Raiola told GR Parlamento.

There was talk of an offer from Barcelona to Inter, but Raiola didn't confirm it, claiming he is unaware of such a situation.

"If an offer was made then it did not come through me," added the agent.

"I have not heard from president Massimo Moratti, and there is no need to. Everything is tranquil. The player is on holiday with his family and he is fine, despite what it being said."

A Lost Michael Jackson Tune...and His Final Concert?

Michael Jackson never got around to recording that long-awaited comeback album, but that doesn't mean there's not plenty of material.

E! News has obtained the King of Pop's recording of "Shout"—the first of what will likely be a slew of posthumous recordings unearthed in the next few years.

The tune, which puts a distinctive Jackson twist on the Isley Brothers' seminal 1959 hit, was cowritten by the New Jersey-based team of Cyphe and Crystal and recorded circa 2002 but was never released.

Jackson's last studio album, Invincible, came out in 2001.

One of Jackson's biographers, Ian Halperin, claims the singer may have left more than 100 unreleased songs to his three children as a "personal legacy," according the The Times of London.

Meanwhile, per TheWrap.com, Jackson's final Los Angeles rehearsal for his upcoming London concert series was recorded by AEG as part of his multimillion-dollar deal, and the concert promoter is reportedly planning to release it on DVD and CD as a "live concert."
